HOW TO SHOP SUSTAINABLY

WHAT IS A LIFE CYCLE ANALYSIS?

To understand how products and systems impact the environment, a process called Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) is used. LCA assesses all of the effects of the creation, distribution, and disposal/breakdown of a product by examining the effects of the energy and materials used to produce it. LCA also looks at the materials that are used for making and transporting the product, the waste created by construction methods, and the effects of all energy and materials used for the decommissioning or disposal of the product at the end of its useful life.

LCA provides a background for the environmental and ecological impacts of systems, processes, and products to guide individuals in making informed decisions.

THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE PURCHASING

When you choose a product, perhaps you can’t always choose something that has the best LCA. However, you CAN research the manufacturers to see which companies put the most effort into reducing their footprint, their waste, and their overall impact on the planet - that should help you choose your not-as-Earth-friendly product.

By thinking green and understanding the Life Cycle Analysis process, consumers can make smarter purchasing decisions that lead to a more sustainable world.
